PIRIE RUNS WORLD CLASS TIME

D. A. G. Pirie relished the short training race held in Henderson and Pollard's Waiho forest for the New Zealand orienteering team yesterday morning, winning the six kilometre event in the world class time of 34m 32s.

P. Cunningham was second in one of his best career performances of 50m 38s while the 64-year-old Norwegian S. Moen caused a major upset by taking third place in 55m 5s, the type of course suiting his map and compass skill admirably.

F. Smith, who actually recorded second best time, and N. Lewis, who shaded his father-in-law Moen by 20s, were both disqualified for taking the first two controls out of order — a move which was an advantage of close on 10 minutes.

Smith's wife won the novice women's race in a time only a fraction more than 7m slower than the novice men's victor.
